The Reiki principles are the spiritual heart of Reiki. Dr. Usui taught that it is absolutely essential dedicate yourself to the rules, to live them. Aim of the principles is to bring light into your life, to promote a peaceful life, love all living beings, and create harmony and peace. The principles mirror what is called Karuna in Buddhism, but can also be found in many other religions in form of humanity, thankfulness, trust, helpfulness etc. By healing yourself and living these principles, you develop true mastership.

Rage, worries or egoism hold us back and prevent us from experiencing our true spiritual selves. The Usui system of natural healing allows us to heal ourselves and others. It re-connects us with the universal life force energy and to make us aware that it will always be there for us.

Dr. Usui recommends to meditate every morning and evening and also to think about them during the day integrate them in our daily routine. You will soon notice that they will be there when you need them; as soon as you start getting annoyed or worrying or being impolite. You will start noticing your own masks, patterns and beliefs and by applying the principles you can remove your blockages and change you patterns into positive healthy ones.

The key to spiritual awakening lies in the here and now. The fundamental message of Mikao Usui is to live in the present rather than dedicating lots of your time to the past or future. Do not anger, because anger is a form of energy which separates you from a constructive creative deed. Transform this energy in positive helpful activity. Your consciousness decides where you are. If you think of the principle instead of getting angry you start recognising the reasons for getting angry. Now you can freely decide whether you want to accept reality and act constructively or hold on to old patterns and get angry.

Worries tell you to stay where you are. Do not move. Make yourself small. Be invisible. Reiki tells you to find yourself, to discover your strengths, to get up and live your life your way. Be a model to the weaker ones and help them to find their way. As with anger, it is important to transform the worrying energy that paralyses you into constructive activity.

Be grateful. Gratefulness means to be carried in the net of life. It connects you with all living beings around you. This principle prevents to from ever being isolated. The source of life is there for everyone, you don’t need to fight against anybody to feel good.

The principle of work hard and honestly causes for some people most resistance. The meaning is not of a 35 hour week, but to work hard on ourselves and our personal growth. There are no holidays, weekends or free time; it is a constant process for a life time. Waiting for the weekend or next holiday is not living in the present. Work hard and remember to concentrate on the important things in your life, not only during an hour of yoga a week, but at every moment.

Be kind to others is probably the biggest challenge, because true spiritual love wants the best for all. Be kind to others can be a smile, a hug, a nice word, a good deed or just an encouraging look. However, it can also be clarity, consequence or power with which somebody is stopped from doing something wrong because they cannot see the consequences of their doing. This can mean to be rejected temporarily because honesty and openness were necessary to open the other person’s eyes, but only true love would run this risk to protect another person.
