What happens during a Hypnotherapy Session?

Usually the first session involves an informal chat during which you can ask any questions you might have. Then the hypnotherapist uses a variety of relaxation techniques to guide you into hypnosis. They will then use verbal suggestions to ‘prepare’ your brain. This part of the session will be recorded for you to listen to at home and build upon the work that you have done. As the body gets used to relaxing more and more, during consequent sessions the therapist guides you to work on the problem you’ve come to see them with. Depending on the case, usually 3-4 sessions are necessary, sometimes more.

As each problem is unique, we deal with what comes up to tackle the problem. Therefore it is not possible to give an exact outline of what happens during consecutive sessions.

Children tend to respond very well to hypnotherapy and usually need fewer sessions (problems like bed wetting, asthma etc. can be solved quickly and easily in most cases).

A good therapist should always encourage the client to continue at home. A good way of doing so is by preparing tapes/CDs for the client or agree to him recording the session so that s/he can listen to the tape again at home for re-enforcement. It is also part of becoming self-reliant. Self-hypnosis is best taught while the client is in hypnosis. This way is much more effective than books, because in the relaxed state it is impossible to read from a book at the same time. If the conscious mind is even demanded, it can impossibly 'switch off'. Therefore this practical guidance is of better help to the client and for example a nice idea to finish off the treatment at the last session in order to allow the client to keep up this newly re-gained health state.
