History of Bach Flower Remedies

Dr. Edward Bach (1886–1936), a London homeopath, bacteriologist and researcher, tried to find more natural ways of treating illness with fewer side effects than drug therapies after having become disillusioned by traditional medicine. His strong belief was that the mental attitude played an important role to health and well-being. In 1930 he left London to search for natural remedies in the countryside. He developed the principle that negative emotions are the reason for physical illness and surely everybody agrees our health tends to be much better that when we’re happy and positive.

He worked out seven ‘main emotions groups’ (fearfulness, uncertainty, lack of interest in present circumstances, loneliness, over-sensitivity, despondence and despair, over-concern and welfare for others) and split them into 38 harmful feelings and found for each feeling a plant whose energetic properties help to cure the imbalance on the emotional level and therefore restore physical health.

Dr. Bach also developed a so-called ‘Rescue Remedy’ which is a mix of 5 plants and helps with shock, trauma, bereavement or stressful situations like dentist appointments, weddings, interviews etc.
